How to recognize truth

Daily Message – January 12th, 2015

I was reading in Alma chapters 46 through 48 in the Book of Mormon. These chapters describe how easy it is for a person with evil and wickedness in their heart to lead people astray. The chapters clearly describe how these leaders prey on the people’s prejudice, anger, and jealousy, and use it as a tool to manipulate their hearts and minds.

The sad thing is, the people are so full of anger, pride, greed, and selfishness that they do not recognize the deception. They think the leader supports them and is looking out for their interests, but they are unable to see him for who he really is.

No matter how unique or different these leaders appear, their beliefs and tactics come from the same source. Satan, the devil, the father of lies, will raise up an endless supply of people who will manipulate others for their own gain. Without the Spirit of God, it is difficult to identify who they are and what they’re trying to do.

Evil will never be defeated by violence. Violence and war may prevent the danger these people pose for a season, but they will return. The same old lies will appear in a new package for a new time because you can’t kill the source.

The people in these chapters refused to keep the commandments of God. They refused to believe in Him and follow Him. As a result,  they willingly belived in and followed a man who deceived them into war, violence, and ultimate destruction.  These chapters are important because in them we learn the importance of following God and keeping His commandments.  When we do these things we have His spirit with us and can discern evil.

I hope you will look to these scriptures as a guide. They teach you how to live so you can recognize truth,  discern evil,  and find peace through Christ.
